going green and building a tiny house?

Posted on timeOctober 7th, 2009 by userpcgumban    flag(2) Comments

Mark L asked:

I am interested in going as green as possible and building a house similar to the Tumbleweed Tiny Houses. I don’t want to buy their set of plans when I want to make my own design. Are there any good websites, books etc on easy portable architecture? I’m really just interested in the materials I’ll need and what-not, so it doesn’t fall down.

I’ve never done construction by my grandfather was a master woodworker and architect, any I am pretty good at building things, it’s in my blood.

So, where do I start?

Here is what I want to learn to do:

-build a house out of shipping containers
-build home made solar panels maybe wind
-get land in the hills and nature outside of LA somewhere cheap maybe not yet developed but going to be
-septic tank
-well or water tower
-use effective materials like bamboo
-maybe farm a little
-ect

I have these ideas but would like to know if there is a place to get thoroughly informed on the subjects like a school, comprehensive book, in depth website, internships ect. I have question like need ideas on how to design the house, and what materials to use, and how to live rural, where to get cheap land ect.
sorry i didnt mean to say a gardening house. i meant to say a residential house that is efficient.

suggestion for name for my eco-friendly building?

Posted on timeAugust 22nd, 2009 by userpcgumban    flag(4) Comments

curiousniks asked:

it is a mid-rise building that is a mixed development(residential-commercial)

it is designed to revolutionize the way these mixed use buildings are designed because it is more eco-friendly and supports/encourages residents to change their lifestyles to a more sustainable future.

THE BUILDING FEATURES
the first two floors are sleek and curving garden floors, with plants, curving concrete pathways and grass…this 2-level garden houses commercial establishments along a concrete pathway and doubles as a gallery that shows people in the community how we can take care of the environment and how beautiful and comfortable eco-buildings can be.

the next 7 storeys are for the tenants of the development, it houses 1 bedroom, 2-3 bedroom, 3-4 bedroom (two floor) units…..the units have spaces that are flexible(can be expanded and configured in a number of ways) and has garden balconies 1.5m by 8m

in a way this development is like this project in dallas –http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/06/10/revision-dallas-xero-project-will-paint-the-town-green/

and the residential units look something like these mobile homes, very flexible and configured in a number of ways—http://sustain.ca/

please help me pick out a name for the building, thanks!

How is something Determined to be “Green” (In terms of Eco-Friendliness)?

Posted on timeJune 19th, 2009 by userpcgumban    flag(6) Comments

M W asked:

With the term “Green” being used so much more often, and new Eco-Friendly methods being used for cars, buildings, waste management, etc… who is determining what is ‘Green’ and what isn’t? Are there certain levels of how Green something is? Is there some sort of position of government regulated (Ha, yeah, I know) system to determine if something is Green or not?

Basically, Im just wondering if something could be labeled Green and then have it turn out that it was barely any different… and who would be in charge of determining what’s Green.

Is it possible to build a ‘green’ barn? If so, how? Please answer?

Ride Like The Wind asked:

In a couple of years, I’d like to build a completely ‘green home’, meaning a home which is completely sustainable, and environmentally friendly. I am very involved with animals, and I ride horses. So, is it possible to build an equally ‘greem barn’? What materials would I use, and any other details? Thank you

Best answer receives ten points!

How are you green as in eco-friendly?

quicentella3 asked:

Do you plan on going green if so when and how ?

My building doesn’t recycle so I am going to start a recycling bin outside my building and see what happens.

I read that those eco-friendly lightbulbs can cause cancer and there very hard to recycle is this true?

Vikram K asked:

I had read about a community in brazil that has played a major part in proving that sustainable communities are possible by using micro grids, mini hydro turbines and small wind turbines. I cannot remember the name or find anything online.

Green Living, Environmental, Energy Efficient, and Durable Home; Info/Education for planning to build one?

Posted on timeJune 8th, 2009 by userpcgumban    flag(4) Comments

Nohbdy Ahtall asked:

If you watch the “Green Planet” channel, and have seen the show “World’s Greenest Homes”, well then you might get the idea.

I want to build an almost completely energy-efficient house, that is good, maybe even great, for the environment. Solar panels, wind turbines, and whatever else there could be that’d help. I don’t mind using recycled material for construction and furniture, and I definitely don’t mind if I have to have sturdy steel beams and etc. As long as it’s a very durable(in fact, I was hoping for: Durable enough to withstand natural and/or man made disasters), I don’t really mind style, but usually it seems the architecture of such houses ends up looking amazing anyway. If anyone knows of materials and furniture that can “really” last, that’d be nice.

I was hoping someone out there had some good ideas on how to learn all about this kind of stuff. Websites, books, E-books, guides. Prices to use on whatever you may know of don’t really matter since this is for my possible future.

I don’t need it to be too specific in all these areas, in fact, just respond to the title of this question if that’s okay!
Oh yeah brandon h, lol. I’ll have to update my picture, my hair “is” cut.

Is their any NGO working to make Delhi green and maintain a sustainable environment?

Posted on timeJune 6th, 2009 by userpcgumban    flag(1) Comment

nitro asked:

and what role is Delhi MCD playing to achieve what they say about clean and green delhi on traffic signs and billboards? Was watching channel aljazeera news doc about Delhi govt constructing arrangements for commonwealth games. The plan covers cutting up of trees in thousands of quantity to build accommodation.
There is a slum near my house which has lasted last 6 national elections. The local MP’s have more dead bodies to covers as compared to the number of power cuts in summers and the sewers blocked in august rain. The number of industries making yamuna river a polluted vein in the capital heart. I was 8yrs ol’ when i took a holy dip in it and was choked to death with filth in water.
One of the 10 things I wanna do before I die is to volunteer for the cause and shape up the place where I was born and brought up. In the past i have participated in teaching children from slums of north delhi wazirpur and nimri colony. Now returning back after 5 years of stay in NZ.
